SVP, Head, Innovation Center

Regeneron

Smita Pillai leads the Regeneron Innovation Center (RIC), a newly established enterprise initiative designed to activate and scale the innovation spirit that has defined Regeneron since its founding. Launched in 2026, the RIC is chartered around Regeneron's Radical Innovation Principles — Challenge Everything, Risk Failure, Identify Fundamental Truths, Find the Limiting Bottlenecks, and Create Simple Solutions. She designs and leads innovation labs, curated innovation experiences, and establishes strategic external thought leadership partnerships. Her mandate is to help Regeneron sustain its innovation spirit as it scales, and to invest in building foundations across the academic and cross sector innovation partners, ensuring Regeneron continues to be celebrated as the most innovative, radically different biotechnology companies in the world, advancing its mission: Science to Medicine.

She brings to this founder-adjacent role the same operational rigor she has used across a 25-year career to build global culture and innovation infrastructure from the ground up. Across LifeSciences, Technology, Financial Services, and Media, Smita has held C-suite roles at Fortune 50 and fast-growing companies including Zendesk, Dow Jones (including The Wall Street Journal), Prudential Financial, and Johnson & Johnson, building functions spanning Global Marketing & Strategy, Diversity & Inclusion, Future of Work, Learning & Development, and Organizational Development. Her throughline has been consistent: translating principles into systems, and making diversity, culture and innovation measurable, scalable, and tied to business outcomes rather than sentiment.

Smita is a recognized global leader in culture, inclusion, and innovation. Her recognitions include the Leadership Excellence Award, NY Moves Mentor, Diversity MBA Top 100 Under 50, Top 100 Leaders of Influence, and the AABDC Top Asian American Business Award, among others. She has been profiled in The Economic Times, The Wall Street Journal, Pharma Exec, Color Magazine, and Leadership Inc, and has spoken at global platforms including the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Women's Economic Summit, the Sundance Film Festival, the WSJ Women In Conference, the WSJ CEO Council, Latina Style, HACR, W.I.N. Forum New York, The Conference Board, and Working Mother Media. She serves on advisory boards for The Asia Foundation, Catalyst, and EGAL Berkeley.

Originally from India, Smita holds a MBA in International Business from Symbiosis Institute, and has completed executive education as a CHRO at Columbia Business School and in Strategic Management at Wharton School. She considers herself a true global citizen, having worked across Mumbai, Dubai, Tokyo, Singapore, Florida, San Francisco, and New York.

She lives with her husband, their three children, and their Rottweiler (Bubbles) in Westchester, New York.
